Do I need a licence to fly it?
Not for recreational fishing. CASA lets you fly a drone under 2 kg recreationally without a licence, but the FD3S is 2.29 kg with the battery in, so it sits in the excluded category and you'll need to register it and hold an operator accreditation — both free and done online through CASA's myCASA portal in about twenty minutes. The standard rules still apply: daylight only, under 120 m, one drone at a time, 30 m from people, and not over beaches crowded with swimmers. Worth a read before your first trip.
How much bait can it actually carry, and for how long?
2.2 kg is the ceiling, but flight time drops as payload goes up: roughly 27 minutes empty, 14 minutes at 1 kg, and 9 minutes at 2 kg. In practice most anglers run well under the limit and get several drops from a charge. A spare battery is the single best accessory you can buy for it.
What happens if it goes in the drink?
It floats. The airframe is IP67 sealed, air-pressure and dunk tested, so a water landing isn't fatal — and if it flips, you can right it with the sticks and take off again from the surface. It'll also auto-release the payload and return home on low battery or signal loss. Rinse it with fresh water after every saltwater session; that's what kills drones long-term, not the dunking.
What's the difference between this and the basic FD3?
The Advanced version adds the 1-axis stabilised 4K camera and live video feed. The basic model skips the camera and focuses purely on carrying payload. If you want to see what's under the drone before you drop — reading gutters, spotting bait schools, checking the reef edge — the camera is the whole reason to go Advanced.
