View full detailsDiesel generators are the ones you want when the job needs serious grunt: a remote site, a house that needs backup, or a big weekend project. They deliver heavy-duty power and keep running longer between fills.
Read moreUse a portable diesel generator to charge gear, run tools, light a worksite, or keep the place going through a blackout. Diesel means long run times and power you can count on, so you are not stopping to refuel every hour. Toss one in the ute, roll up, and fire it when you need it. For a closer look at backup use, start with our guide to diesel generators for home backup.
The reason to pick diesel is how long it will sit there and work. Look at tank size and how the unit is rated for continuous use, then match that to the hours you actually need. A bigger sticker is no help if you are still filling it halfway through the day.
Electric start is the usual pick on a diesel generator you will use often. Some units add remote start, and some can start automatically when the mains drops out. If the job is a blackout at the house, that automatic start is the feature to ask about. Check the product page for what that machine actually has.
House loads and most tools are single phase. A workshop or plant that wants three phase needs a three-phase diesel generator. Some units are also built for mine sites and heavier duty. Match the outlets and the duty to the job before you compare prices.
This is the usual portable diesel generator job. Tools, lights and charging, then back in the ute. Size it to what has to run at once, and allow for the kick on start-up.
A diesel generator can cover the house loads you actually need while the mains is down, and it will usually run longer than a smaller petrol unit. Run it outside, clear of the house. If you want a unit that stays beside the house, see generators for home backup.
Larger diesel generators, and units built for mine spec or heavy duty, are for plant and sites that a small portable will not cover. Do not assume every diesel generator will do that. Check the product page, or tell us the motor you need to run.
Shop diesel generators, then match output and run time to the job. Unsure whether you need a ute-sized unit, automatic start, or something for a blackout? We'll help you pick.
Many diesel canopy and open-frame sets use AVR to hold voltage steadier under changing loads. Double check on the product page for confirmation. Inverters regulate a different way, so don’t assume every diesel is AVR. For lithium banks you still want a proper charger, not AVR alone.
Yep, run a proper AC charger or inverter-charger off the diesel when the sun’s not enough. Match charger input to the outlets and continuous watts, leave surge headroom, and never put generator AC on the battery terminals. Quieter charging options live under portable inverter generators; wider bank gear is in off-grid power systems.
Only if your board or gear is already three-phase. A normal single-phase house wants a single-phase diesel. Farm sheds and workshop motors are where a diesel 3 phase generator earns its keep.
Diesel is the pick when you want grunt and long run times so you’re not refuelling every hour. Petrol is often the simpler ute unit for a shorter job. If that’s all you need, see petrol generators.
Yes, if it’s sized for the loads you want to keep on, and you run it outside clear of the house. Some units can start automatically when the mains drops. For a set that stays with the house, see generators for home backup.
Electric start means you’re not pulling a cord. Remote start fires it from a distance. Automatic start (often with a transfer switch) kicks in when the mains fails. Not every unit has all three, but make sure to check the product page first.
