What a Three Phase Generator Is For
415V motors, not a normal house
A three phase generator puts out 415V so it can run three-phase motors: workshop machines, pumps, compressors and site plant. A normal Australian house is single phase. You only need one of these if the switchboard, or the gear you want to run, is already three phase.
240V sockets on the same set
Most of these machines also have 240V sockets beside the 415V outlet. That lets you run a lead for lights or a single-phase tool without a second generator. It does not turn a single-phase house into a three-phase supply. The 415V side still needs three-phase gear, or a board that is already wired for it.
3 Phase Diesel Generators and Petrol Sets
Silenced Hyundai canopies
The quieter 3 phase diesel generators here are the Hyundai DHY canopies: 11kVA, 14kVA, 16kVA and 22kVA. They are listed at about 67 dB(A) at 7 metres. That is an enclosed set, not a whisper. Portable and industrial diesel
The smaller diesels are the Hyundai GHD 6.5kVA and 8kVA, Yanmar 4.5kVA and 6.5kVA, and Gentech around 6.8kVA and 7kVA. The GHD 8kVA and both Yanmar sets are open frames. Noise on these smaller diesels is about 80 dB(A) at 7 metres, and the GHD 8kVA is about 82 dB(A) at 7 metres. Honda and Gentech petrol
The petrol sets are the Honda GH machines from 6kVA to 16kVA, plus Gentech petrol sets at 7kVA, 12kVA and 16kVA. Honda machines come in long-range tank and larger-tank versions on the bigger models. Most Honda sets sit around 72 to 74 dB at 7 metres. The Gentech 12kVA and 16kVA petrol sets are about 75 dBA at 7 metres, and the 7kVA petrol sets are about 69 dBA at 7 metres. How to Size a 3 Phase Generator
Add the motors that start together
Write down the three-phase motors that have to run at the same time, then leave room for the kick when a motor starts. A generator that matches the running watts can still bog down on start-up. If you are unsure of the start current, tell us the motor and we will size it with you.
Start type and backup use
Electric start is the usual pick once the set gets past a small portable. If the job is a blackout on a three-phase board, look at the Hyundai DHY sets that list an automatic transfer switch and pair one with a proper transfer switch.
