What does an automatic transfer switch actually do?
Three things, in order. It continuously monitors your mains supply. When that supply fails, it sends a start signal to your generator and waits for it to reach operating speed. Then it transfers your electrical load from the grid over to the generator. When mains power comes back and stays stable, it reverses the process and shuts the generator down. Critically, it also keeps the two supplies electrically separated so generator power can never feed back into the grid, which is a serious safety matter for line workers.

Will it work with my generator?
It is designed for single phase generators rated between 5 and 22kVA. Your generator also needs to be capable of remote or automatic starting — a recoil-start unit cannot be started by a transfer switch, and an electric-start model needs the right control connections. Can I install this myself?
No. It is wired between your mains supply and your switchboard, which is licensed electrical work in every Australian state and territory. Beyond the legal position, incorrect installation of a transfer switch can energise the network during an outage and put line workers at risk. Do I still need to maintain the generator?
Yes, and arguably more so. Automatic gear gets forgotten precisely because it works without you. Run the generator under load every couple of months, keep the starting battery charged or on a tender, keep fuel fresh, and confirm the transfer actually happens. A standby system that has never been tested is an assumption, not a plan.
