Why choose diesel over a petrol fire pump?
Three reasons. It uses less fuel under sustained load, so it runs longer between refills. The engine will outlast a petrol equivalent by a wide margin. And diesel stores far better — petrol goes stale in three to six months, while diesel keeps close to a year, which matters for a pump that may sit idle between fire seasons. The trade off is weight and price: 70 kg against 24 to 27 kg for the petrol models.

Is it too heavy to move around?
At 70 kg dry it is a two person lift, or a one person job with a trolley or a ute ramp. Most owners set it up in a fixed position near the water source with hoses run out from there, rather than carrying it about. What do I need before the first start?
Engine oil and diesel per the Yanmar manual, since it ships dry. Check the battery is connected and charged for the electric start. Fit the 1.5" suction hose with the strainer fully submerged, connect your delivery hoses, then start it. Never run it dry.
